Tweeting With The Rams

I love Twitter because I have an unashamed love of celebrities, sports stars, stand-up comedians, showgirls, sports media personalities, food establishments (especially those that sell candy) and breaking weather.

Especially with celebrities and sports stars it’s almost like one of those one-way mirrors where you can see in but they can’t see out. I’m constantly amazed what people will tweet/post that is completely open and unvarnished and not controlled by publicity people or agents. For example: Steven Jackson posted a pic of his own bobble head doll that he apparently keeps in his bathroom. Fascination #1 – he keeps a bobble head of himself in his bathroom! Fascination #2 – all the lotions and jars and stuff captured in the background of the pic. He uses Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunscreen SPF 70! Way to take care of your skin @sj39!

What I dislike is celebrity types whose twitter accounts are controlled by publicity people. I had to unfollow Bret Michaels because his tweets were so generic and boringly informative it was like Walgreens was writing for him.

It’s not just me having weird, one-way interactions with them either. Sometimes they tweet you back. The exceptional in every way Larry Fitzgerald – yep, THAT Larry Fitzgerald – tweeted me back once. He said, “What’s up” just like we were BFFs! Okay, maybe not like BFFs, but like, you know, total strangers. But still, have you ever had ANY personal interaction with Larry Fitzgerald?

Then of course there’s my beloved Rams: Steven Jackson has tweeted me back twice, including a funny exchange when he was concerned that his things were being sold at the Rams garage sale. He also feels he’d “kill it” if he was ever on Dancing With The Stars. I won an autographed player hat from Craig Dahl that he gave away in a twitter contest. He mailed to my house himself but wisely used One Rams Way as his return address. I did not win the signed Brandon Gibson jersey he gave away when he reached 5,000 followers. Disappointment. Michael Hoomanawanui hates cats which is a huge strike against him, but he turned me on to Storage Wars, which he loves, so I almost forgive him for not being a cat fan. Then there’s the shall remain nameless wide receiver who never tweets about football which makes me wonder about his commitment.

I’ve unfollowed some people too. I had to exit both from James Laurinaitis and Kurt Warner because I do not share their view of the world although I admire them both as players and men. Kurt Warner still does a yearly coat drive here in St. Louis even though he doesn’t have to.

I love Twitter because I think it’s fun to read what Steven Jackson has for breakfast on game day and see pics of Craig Dahl flipping tires at Rams Park. I love being reminded that some of these guys are so young when they post lovey-dovey remarks about their girlfriends. It’s interesting to follow them on vacation, at the holidays and see pics of them taking their kids to the zoo. They are real people doing real things and it’s sort of fascinating to get a glimpse into their everyday lives even if it is a pic of their shopping cart full of fifteen boxes of fruit snacks.
