Peter King – I’ll Tell You

From Today’s Monday Morning Quarterback by Peter King:

Laurent Robinson. Someone please tell me how the Rams and Falcons gave up on Laurent Robinson. I’ve got to know. His hands, his deep-threat ability and his ability to rise to the occasion on big throws downfield all show he’s a starting receiver for a good team in the NFL. Mind-boggling two teams didn’t think he was good enough.

First and foremost, after the Rams, San Diego also thought that Robinson was not good enough. As did every other team in the NFL as he went unclaimed through waivers and was a free agent available during the first two weeks of the season.
On the St. Louis side of things, the Rams KNEW he was not good enough. Watching Laurent Robinson last year, as he dropped passes when he was open and continued to get marked out of the game by opposing corners.  He was sluggish and suffered from a lack of focus. He did not even seem to care last year.
Football Outsiders rated Laurent Robinson the second worst wide receiver in the NFL last year with -141 DYAR (Defense Adjusted Yards Above Replacement). He was worth -32.6% DVOA to the team. He had an a horrendous 45% catch rate. Why even throw the ball his way if he is going to catch the ball less than half the time.
Some of this we may be able to attribute to injuries as he missed half the season in his last season in Atlanta. After three quality games with the Rams in 2009, a fractured fibula ended his season. It is possible he is finally getting back to health after the broken fibula, but neither the Rams nor San Diego saw this sort of production and did not consider him hurt when they let him go.

Let’s put it this way. After last season, everyone who is a Rams fan would have thought the Rams completely insane if they kept Laurent Robinson on for another season. That’s how bad his season was last year and Football Outsiders agrees.
