Rams Finish Cuts With Toston, Lewis, Onobun, Selvie, Avery

The Rams made a few very big surprise moves in cutting their roster down to 53 players today, so let’s categorize all the cuts into surprises, slight surprises and obvious.

Surprises: Donnie Avery, Thad Lewis, Fendi Onobun, George Selvie, Mardy Gilyard, Zac Diles
Let’s handle this one by one.
Avery – Avery was drafted by the current GM, but 2 offensive coordinators ago. He’s coming off major knee surgery.
Thaddeus Lewis – Lewis played great in the preseason and the Rams are probably trying to sneak him through to the practice squad again this year to free up a spot on the roster.
Fendi Onobun – The Rams drafted Onobun high last year based on his workouts, kept him on the active roster and gave him a small amount of snaps last year. But, with the pick of Lance Kendricks in this draft, Onobun and his raw talent have become expendable.
Mardy Gilyard – Gilyard got a lot of time in the preseason to impress and failed to. He was drafted by the previous offensive coordinator and rumors of his lack of ability to pick up the playbook have haunted him since day 1.
Zac Diles – Diles was one of the Rams first free agent signings this offseason, but didn’t play well enough to earn a lot of playing time in the preseason and didn’t do much with the small time he received.

Slight: Renardo Foster, Daniel Muir, Jonathan Nelson, Quinn Ojinnaka, George Selvie
All of these guys were on the bubble, and all lost battles. Foster and Ojinnaka lost a battle with Adam Goldberg and Drew Miller for the offensive line positions. Muir lost a battle with Gary Gibson and Darell Scott for the last DT spot. George Selvie lost a battle with Eugene Sims for the final defensive end spot.

Obvious: Tim Atchison, Demarco Cosby, Tae Evans, Marlon Favorite, John Henderson, Kevin Hughes, Greg Matthews, Ryan McKee, Chase Reynolds, Keith Toston
