Diggs Replacement At LB

With staring strong side linebacker Na’il Diggs officially on IR and set for surgery, the Rams practiced with David Vobora at strong side linebacker and Chris Chamberlain starting at the weak side.  With the problems the Rams have had at linebacker this year, this is slightly a controversial position, but the Rams should be fine with Vobora replacing Diggs.

When Vobora came into the game, he would play weak side linebacker, a position he is not suited to.  He struggles in coverage against smaller and faster players, which the weak side linebacker is tasked to do more often than not.  Vobora excels against the run, he’s big and strong and can fill in the holes in the run game and make tackles.  When he is forced to cover, the Rams have big problems.  So, when he is deployed on the strong side and is able to flow to the running back and make plays, he is better off.  And the strong side is the spot where he can make that happen.

The Rams will go with Chris Chamberlain at weak side linebacker, a spot they have had nothing but trouble with the entire season.  Larry Grant played at an exceptional level there in the preseason, but turned into a pumpkin in the regular season.  Grant is better when he focuses on the run as well, so that makes Chamberlain the natural choice to fill on the weak side.

This week, the Rams are playing New Orleans who deploys 3 WR sets and agile running backs in most sets, so the Rams will not have to worry about their base defense as much.  That will be a big relief for a Rams team that is happy to go into the nickel because of all the trouble they have had with their outside linebackers.
