2009 Rams “Red Flags”

Rams Minicamp Football
It’s been great reading about the new and improved Rams. New coach Steve Spagnuolo is building up the defense. He started doing this by drafting James Laurinaitis, Bradley Fletcher, and Dorell Scott. Plus, from New York he brought over James Butler to go along with Oshiomogho Atogwe at the safety spots. The offensive line has been beefed up with Jason Brown and Jason Smith. No one will argue whether these were good moves.

Do you know what I look at right after things go bad? The warning signs, the red flags, the little issues in the back of my mind that would have made my stomach queasy if I hadn’t shoved them instantly into the black abyss of my subconscious. Here are some of the red flags I’m seeing for the Ram’s 2009 season:

1) Mark Bulger – obviously we all have positive vibes and prayers going out for Marc, but I don’t see anything changing here. He hasn’t had a winning season since 2003 and nothing has changed from last year to this year. No press conference announcing some new hard core physical and mental training that Bulger attended in the off season. No new confidence… no new nothing. Bulger’s performance will be no different this year than last.

2) The wide receiver core – there are 10 wide receivers on the Rams roster. Only 2 of them are worth anything. We have Avery who is a serviceable receiver (and we are glad to have him) and Ronald Curry. The most receptions the veteran Curry has ever had in a year is 62. Plus he is coming to the Rams unwanted and returning from injury. The former Ram, Isaac Bruce, has caught more than 62 receptions in a season 9 times (most was 119). So not only is there nothing new about Bulger, there is also no one for him to throw to.

3) Other red flags – We have a new full back, Jerome Johnson, who hasn’t played on offense since high school, lets face it Stephen Jackson will probably get injured, there isn’t a single back up quarterback that can start after Bulger gets hurt (start and win that is), and we have a completely unproven (the strongest players are just coming out of the draft) and unimpressive defense.

I used to date this really hot chick until she cheated on me. Over course she told me she cheated on her last boy friend too. I just never thought she’d do it to me. (Always head the warning signs.)

I’m sorry, but this is going to be another very long year for the Rams.

  1. Jeff Roman says:

Jerome Johnson is actually the backup fullback, with veteran FB Mike Karney clearing the lanes for Steven Jackson.

Kyle Boller is the Rams backup quarterback and he has started in the NFL. He hasn’t been successful as a starter, but if he had, he would not be a backup QB. Having a second string QB with starting experience is a luxury in the NFL.
