Report: Rams to Tag Safety Lamarcus Joyner, Leaving WR Sammy Watkins On the Outside Looking In

It will be interesting to see what the Rams do today in regards to their franchise tag, as Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports says that the tag will be placed on safety Lamarcus Joyner.

Here’s a tidbit on Joyner:

Joyner, who struggled to find a role under the Rams’ previous coaching staff, thrived under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Joyner, in his fourth NFL season, moved from nickelback to free safety, started a career-high 12 games and recorded the first three interceptions of his NFL career.

So while Joyner exceeded expectations, Watkins never really got going. He arrived during training camp, in August, after a trade that sent cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round draft pick to Buffalo.

While Joyner might enjoy knowing he’s going to be with the Rams going forward, it might leave wide out Sammy Watkins out of the loop, as the receiver may be on the outside looking in trying to get a new deal from Los Angeles.

Watkins had 39 receptions, 593 yards and eight scores last season for the Rams, but could be on the open market if the team goes with Joyner over him for the franchise tag.
