For the first 20 minutes of the game the Rams offense was anemic. Actually, both teams looked pretty bad. Lots of penalties and a general lack of execution (at least on the offensive side of the ball). Then something happened. Todd Gurly happened. 10:35 remaining in the second quarter and Rams QB Foles handed off to Gurley. Immediately before Rams left guard Reynolds pulled to the right and laid a monster block that opened a whole for Gurley. Gurley exploded past the Niners secondary for a 71 yard run, the Rams first TD, and even more importantly some much needed offensive momentum. Much later in the quarter (:39 remaing in the half) Nick Foles hits Rams tight end Jared Cook on a 49 yard pass to the left setting up a 2 yard sweeping TD run to the right by Tavon Austin.
The 49ers defense has played pretty good, but the Rams defense has truly dominated the 49ers. They backed the Niners offense up deep in their own territory over and over again. The Rams first points of the game came via tackling Niners RB Davis behind the goal line for a safety. The Niners made a few offensive pushes, but were held to FGs on both attempts.
If the Rams can keep this same formula going in the second half (dominating defense and a few explosive plays on offense) then I think we can come away with positive results. At the half the score is Niners 6, Rams 20. The second half of the game is about to start… Go Rams!!!
