Rams Beat Bears 42-21 – Game Summary

bears_rams_04

The Rams led by 10 coming out of halftime and if you looked at the final score (42-21 Rams) you’d think the Rams had this thing in hand, but that’s not really how it played out.  They came into the 3rd with no Zac Stacy to be seen.  Stacy contributed 87 rushing yards and a TD in the first half and his ability to rush up the middle was the key to their early success.  So, the Rams offense stalled in the 3rd.  The Bears on the other hand moved the ball with ease.  The Rams defensive secondary refused to cover anyone in the middle of the field.  The Bears marched down the field, but once inside the 20 yard line they ran into the greatest defensive confrontation they had encountered all season.  Here’s that play by play from ESPN.com

3rd and 6 at STL 20 (Shotgun) J.McCown pass incomplete deep right to E.Bennett. PENALTY on SL-B.McGee, Defensive Pass Interference, 19 yards, enforced at SL 20 – No Play.
1st and 1 at STL 1 M.Bush up the middle to SL 1 for no gain (W.Hayes; J.Laurinaitis).
Timeout #1 by CHI at 09:20.
2nd and 1 at STL 1 J.McCown pass incomplete short right to A.Jeffery [R.Quinn]. PENALTY on SL-B.McGee, Defensive Holding, 0 yards, enforced at SL 1 – No Play.
1st and 1 at STL 1 M.Bush right tackle to SL 3 for -2 yards (A.Ogletree; T.McDonald).
2nd and 3 at STL 3 (Shotgun) J.McCown pass short middle to M.Bennett for 3 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on CHI-J.Bushrod, Offensive Holding, 10 yards, enforced at SL 3 – No Play.
2nd and 13 at STL 13 (Shotgun) J.McCown pass short middle to M.Forte for 13 yards, TOUCHDOWN. The Replay Assistant challenged the runner broke the plane ruling, and the play was REVERSED. (Shotgun) J.McCown pass short middle to M.Forte to SL 1 for 12 yards (A.Ogletree).
3rd and 1 at STL 1 (Shotgun) J.McCown sacked at SL 10 for -9 yards (M.Brockers). PENALTY on SL-M.Brockers, Roughing the Passer, 0 yards, enforced at SL 1 – No Play.
1st and 1 at STL 1 M.Bush right guard to SL 1 for no gain (R.Quinn).
2nd and 1 at STL 1 M.Bush right tackle for 1 yard, TOUCHDOWN.

Time after time the Rams D-line shut the Bears down.  Had they not received a totally unmerited roughing the passer penalty, that drive would have ended in a Rams (positive) turnover.  Ultimately, the Bears crossed the goal line bringing the score to Bears 21 – Rams 27.  7 minutes left to play and the Rams offense had stalled (Stacy out and backup Cunningham had just left the game with an injury).  Plus, Rams safety Johnson was injured and replaced by a totally outclassed McGee.  And here we go.  Some how the Rams needed to put something together and score at least a field goal to hold onto the lead.

Instead of going down for the count Rams RB Cunningham dug deep.  He ran for over 100 yards in the 2nd half of the game and contributed game changing plays on the onsuing drive.  13 right up the middle, 5 yards to the right, and finally another 9 off to the right for a TD.  After a successful 2-pt conversion the Rams were up by 14.   Just over 3 minutes left to play and why didn’t I fell confident?  Bears QB McCown played great all game (102.4 passer rating when all was said and done) and you just had a sense that this thing wasn’t over.

The next 4 plays McCown passed for approx 30 yards.  My mouth was getting dry and that old feeling was crawling up my spine.  If you’ve been a Rams fan for any length of time you know the Rams excel in creating unusual and cruel ways of losing.   Instead TE Quinn delivered a crushing blow to McCown (Quinn’s only sack of the day) who coughed up the ball.  Quinn picked up the ball and scampered for 31 yards and a coffin closing TD.  The coffin was nailed shut shortly afterwards when Rams safety McLeod intercepted McCown with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game.  The Rams move to a season record of 5-6.  Next week we take on our (struggling) arch enemies the SF 49ers.

Never a dull moment Rams fans.  Until next week….  GO RAMS!!!
