Jags vs Rams: Week 5 Preview

I was thinking about watching the Rams game on Sunday… of course jumping off the Arch might be more fun.  Ok ok, I guess I still prefer watching the Rams, but man we had better win.  Jacksonville is ranked last in the NFL.  The Rams on the other hand are ranked a much more respectable 19th.  The numbers alone might suggest the Rams are playing well or average; somewhere around the middle of the pack.  What it really means is there are a lot of bad teams this year; because at 1-3 the Rams are not significantly better than the bottom of the barrel Jags.

Outside of the rankings what do we know?  Well, the Jags have a bad rush defense.  Of course the Rams are terrible at running the ball so that doesn’t help.  We know the Jags have only scored 31 points all season (dang).  But… in the last three games the Rams have given up 97 points versus gaining only 42.  But the Jags give up an average of 32 pts per game and 400 yards of offense.  On the other hand, when Bradford feels defensive pressure he can’t pass his way out of a paper bag.  So, this one is going to be close.

Want some miscellaneous info?  1 Jag WR Justin Blackmon will be playing in Sunday’s game as he has completed his 4 week suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.  2 Rams RT Roger Saffold will miss the game due to injuries. And 3 Rams rookie power RB Zac Stacy has been activated for Sunday’s game.

What does it all mean?  Despite my disappointment in this year’s Rams, I’m going to have to say it means a Rams victory.  I expect the offensive line to show some pop when executing running plays.  I expect them to get back to protecting golden boy QB Sam Bradford.  I expect the Rams defensive line and linebackers to step up their game and make tackles.  I hope RB Stacy can bring a little magic to the Edward Jones Dome and damage the ailing Jags’ run defense.  And, I will simply cross my fingers that Rams CBs and Safeties don’t get burned.  Plus, if the Rams can show any level of competence in the game, I’m certain the fans will raise the roof.  The 12th man might be the difference in this one.  The extra energy could be just what the doctor ordered to help the Rams notch a ‘W’ in the win/loss column.

As always… GO RAMS!!!
