Rams vs Cardinals – Post Game Analysis

Are you ready for some brilliant analysis?  Well, don’t hold your breath b/c the stats tell us nothing.  The Cardinals beat us in the following categories:

1 More first downs

2 More total yards gained

3 More time of possession

4 Higher Avg gain per play

5 Earned more yards per rush

6 Earned more yards per pass

7 The Rams scored 2 TDs and the Cards score 3

8 In my opinion, the Rams gave the Cards 14 points (when Cook was stripped and lost possession instead of scoring a TD and when Bradford threw an INT on the Rams 2 yard line resulting in a Cards TD)

9 The Rams had no answer for Larry Fitzgerald who scored 2 TDs.

In spite of this we did win (whew) and I think it comes down to 3 key points:

1 Rams K Greg Zuerlein scored 12 points off 4 FGs.  He kicked a 48 yard field goal to win the game, but his Cardinal counterpart Jay Feely missed a 50 yarder earlier in the game.

2 The Cardinals did not sufficiently use their star WR Fitzgerald.  Clearly the Rams had no way to stop the 6’3” receiver and the Cardinals did not exploit the mismatch.

3 The Rams defense was able to hold the Cards scoreless in the 4th quarter, while the Rams offense tacked on 14 (TD, 2pt conversion, and 2 FGs).

The Rams offense showed a balanced attack and new TE Jared Cook had a great debut going 7 of 10 for 141 yards and 2 TDs.  He should have had a 3rd TD and I hope he got his butt chewed for the turnover b/c that kind of mistake could have cost us the game if we were playing a better team.  Bottom line the Rams did enough to get the win.  So, congrats to the 1-0 St Louis Rams.  Next week we take on the 0-1 Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta.  Go Rams!!!

  1. Mike says:

I think you (or your source) got your sack stats backwards. Robert Quinn had three sacks, and he’s a ram! Hayes got the fourth sack.

When was the last time the rams were first in the NFC west?
