Rams – 2013 Prelude

NFL: St. Louis Rams-Rookie Minicamp

Another NFL season is right around the corner.  As someone who follows the Rams closely, I find it time to do a little personal soul searching.  What are my expectations for the Rams in 2013-2014?  What are your expectations?  Initially, I wasn’t feeling that great.  We lost a couple of cornerstone guys with WR Danny Amendola going to the Patriots and RB Steven Jackson going to the Falcons.  I know I gave Steven a fair amount of grief last season, but it’s like giving your brother grief.  It’s done in love.  It’s about wanting to see greatness out of someone who was already performing at a high level.  So when I heard we lost these guys it was definitely a blow to me.  A few months have passed and I’m able to see the team in more of a macro view.  Now, I see what has been done in both free agency and in the draft.

I like that we’ve picked up a few offensive weapons (Austin, Bailey, Cook) and that we have strengthened both our offensive and defensive lines.  These are all must have moves.  There are still some questions in the big equation.  How will Sam Bradford, RB Daryl Richardson, our deep defensive secondary, and our receiving corps hold up?  Time will tell.  One thing I do know is that all of these moves build on Coach Fisher’s greatest achievement with the team to date; a mind change.  The Rams are no longer that sorry team no one has expectations for.  They are building for the future.  Not going after flash in the pan talents, but have built a solid core that can be added to year over year.  I’m not sure what this will give us in the upcoming season, but I don’t really care.  I really believe that if we are unable to make the playoff this season; we will definitely be there the following.

My simple 2013 goals: 1) improved play over the course of the season 2) that we beat bad teams 3) that we surprise a few of the good teams and steal a few on the road 4) that we continue to beat the crap out of the SF 49ers, and 5) that we see more and more flashes of brilliance (and leadership) from Sam Bradford.  It would also be very cool if God smiled upon us and kept the team healthy.

Rookies are reporting to camp today; the rest of the team in a couple of days.  Things should start getting interesting very soon.  Go Rams!!!
