Week 10 Match Up – Rams vs 49ers

The Rams take on the 49ers this weekend in SF at Candlestick Park. Here are some key rankings for both teams:

Rams 49ers
Passing Yards 24th 28th
Rushing Yards 18th 1st
Passing Defense 17th 2nd
Rushing Defense 13th 5th

The 49ers are playing incredibly tough defense. Their passing offense is struggling a little bit, but not as much as ours. They are the best team in the NFL at accumulating rushing yards while the Rams are 18th in the NFL at defending the rush (not a good combination for the Rams).

The 49ers have only had 2 losses so far this season. The first was against the Minnesota Viking who have a pretty balanced offensive attack. The Vikings defense was able to hold SF RB Frank Gore to 63 yards and no TDs. Neither team had an explosive passing game. The longest pass for SF was 22 yards, while the longest pass for the Viking was just slightly longer at 24 yards. The difference in this game was a rushing TD by Viking’s QB Christian Ponder.

The 49ers also lost their contest against the NY Giants. The Giants are primarily a passing team, but on that day (week 6) Eli Manning only passed for 193 yards and 1 TD. 49ers Alex Smith had a ‘good’ day completing 19 of 30 for 200 yards, but no TDs. And in what could be a critical stat, Frank Gore was held to 36 yards rushing and no TDs.

Here are Frank Gore’s rushing stats for SF’s wins:

2012 Week# OPP YRDS TDs
1 GB 112 1
2 DET 89 1
4 NYG 64 1
5 BUF 106 1
7 SEA 131 0
9 ARZ 55 0

In week 8, Alex Smith went off passing 18-19 for 232 yards and 3 TDs. This was one of those ‘career best’ games for Alex Smith and we don’t expect a repeat this Sunday. So, although shutting done Frank Gore isn’t the only key to picking up a win over SF, it is a critical one.

If the Rams can get their own offense up off the ground and can some how shut down Gore, then this game might be interesting. The game will showcase master head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher. If anyone can find and exploit a weakness in this SF team it is definitely Fisher. Go Rams!!!
