Steven Jackson Trade Rumors

The NFL trade deadline has been pushed out 2 days from today to Thursday.  Near the top of the MLT list (most likely traded) is Steven Jackson’s name.  It seems unlikely that such a pillar of the Rams offense would even be considered for the chopping block.  On the other hand, the Rams did draft 2 running backs this season when there were plenty of other positional needs to be filled.  But SJ is the Rams all time leading rusher who is barely out of his prime (sad to be 29 and out of your prime).  Certainly the ‘new look’ Rams would value the veteran presence in their lineup?  On the other hand the Rams are looking much more like the 2011 Rams as the season progresses.  The team’s ‘run first’ philosophy seems to be only that; a philosophy.  In reality, rushing yards only make up approximately 34% of Rams total yardage.  Seems like up and coming running backs Richardson and Pead could carry that load right?  If we come out of the passing closet (we are a passing team and we’re proud of it), then it might make sense to bring in real receiving talent.

But Rams management denies any such trades are in the pipeline.  In an article by Bryan Burwell of the St Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday, Burwell writes:

‘Neither the Jackson rumor nor any of those other fantasy-league daydreams are coming true, at least not any time in the near future. The Rams’ front office maintains that the organization hasn’t hung a for-sale sign around Jackson, and they can’t stop people from calling.’

My take?  I like SJ and everything he stands for.  Problem is the Rams are still losing.  Without Jackson the Rams’ running game will not seriously falter.  What we need are a couple of bona fide wide receiving threats.  Clear and simple.  If we can leverage Jackson to pick up that kind of talent, then I’m all for it.  Don’t be fooled either.  Rams management is not stupid.  They understand the needs of the team.  PR announcements are not legal contracts and don’t necessarily lend themselves to a company’s behavior or actions.  We’ll know for sure in a couple days, but I wouldn’t be that surprised to see Jackson traded.

I’m sure he’s just gonna stay put. No ones gonna offer a number 1 receiver for him. And if its a late round pick I think were better off keeping him. Only way i see him going is if the price is right and I’m sure if we were gonna trade him he’d be gone by now.
