SJ’s Renegotiated Contract – Reading Between The Lines

During Thursday night’s Cardinals vs Rams game sportscasters announced that SJ’s contract had been renegotiated and the Rams were ‘allowing’ SJ to opt out of his contract after the 2012 season. It was positioned as if the Rams were doing him a favor. Allowing SJ to move on to bigger and better things. Hmmm… According to Jim Thomas at the St Louis Post-Dispatch a number of things can now happen at the end of the season.
• Jackson could decide to stay and play under the current terms of the contract in 2013.

• Jackson could decide to leave St. Louis before the start of free agency by voiding 2013.

• The Rams could decide to sign Jackson to a contract extension.

• The Rams could release or trade Jackson if Jackson doesn’t void the contract.

If you read between the lines, do you know what this means? It mean bye bye Steven Jackson. This is big business. No team or company does anything for the good of the player or employee. The jist of the ‘renegotiation’ is the final bullet point:

• The Rams could release or trade Jackson if Jackson doesn’t void the contract.

The Rams are saying, look you former pro bowler and all around Rams good guy, if this isn’t your best year ever, this is your last year. It’s good it was positioned in a positive way. SJ deserves the respect, but don’t be fooled. SJ has been around a long time and for maybe the first time is experiencing a performance decline.  Let’s face it. SJ is a 3rd down specialist/situational running back. At this stage of his career he is no longer the guy you build your offense around. On the positive side he is still a definite offensive threat and has NFL market value.

So what am I trying to say? Enjoy watching SJ now.  He’s a big part of our teams recent history, but after this season he probably won’t be around.
