Up Close and Personal – Rams vs Bears

Taken by Mark Peterson at Soldier Field

Thanks to the good people at Verizon I was at Solider Field today to watch the Rams vs Bears game.  Verizon treated us to an incredible breakfast (prime rib, bbq ribs, sausage, omelets, waffles, potatoes…) and then the Rams treated us to oatmeal (no sugar) with a terrible game that was hard to swallow.  I hate to say it, but they looked exactly like last year’s Rams.  In the first half of the game the Rams had earned at grand total of 58 yards on offense.  Even with that terrible start we were only down 10-3 going into the half.

Coming into the 2nd half I really thought things were going to turn around.  They didn’t.  Our play calling was incredibly predictable, our execution was terrible, our offensive line was horrific (Bradford was sacked 6 times), and our effort level seemed anemic.  Even with all of that said, at the end of the 3rd quarter the score was was 10-6 Bears.  I hate it when you’re watching any contest and you realize that the winner is going to be the team who is not as bad as the other team.  (I told a friend the winner of this game is the next team to score a TD.)

In the 4th the Bears added a field goal to their total making the game score 13-6.  Then with 9:06 remaining it happened.  The Rams had possession of the ball and after throwing a nice 19 yard pass to Amendola on the right, Bradford throws a pick-6 to Wright to basically seal the fate of this game.  Bradford’s QB rating today was 39.2 (Cutler was 58.9 which is why we stayed in the game until the 4th quarter).  The Rams had other opportunities, but with such predictable play calling (almost all short slot passes) they weren’t able to move the ball. Now short slot passes are the Rams bread-and -butter, but you have got to mix it up for that to work.  Until the very end of the game the Rams did not throw a single middle to long range pass.  Not one.  And the one thrown at the end of the game was intercepted.

The great grub and beautiful weather lightened the blow of this embarrassing game for me, but the Rams took a big step backwards today.  We’ll break the game down for you more over the next couple of days.  Today I am enjoying Chicago…
