The Chopping Block

We’re moving into the 3rd week of the preseason and we’re also moving closer to Aug 31st.  Aug 31st is the day all NFL teams have to cut their rosters down to 53 players.  There is still some time for on-the-bubble players to showcase their talents (daily practices and 2 preseason games), but many will not make the cut.  In fact the Rams drew first blood yesterday when they announced the trade of CB Josh Gordy to the Colts.  This is a good situation for everyone since the Rams still have 3 backup CBs (Fletcher, Johnson, and Murphy).  The current roster shows 89 players.  So, I took a pass through the list and here is the first layer of fat:

Hebert, T-Bob C Anderson, Todd RB
Burney, Kendric CB Middleton, Calvin RB
Daniels, Matthew DB Reynolds, Chase RB
Pointer, Quinton DB Richardson, Daryl RB
Hayes, William DE Schweiger, Nicholas RB
Jarrett, Jamaar DE McKee, Ryan RT
Smith, Scott DE Long, Joe T
Banks, Cornell DT Valdez, Jose T
Conrath, Matthew DT Eldridge, Brody TE
Gill, John DT Harkey, Cory TE
Brown, Aaron LB McNeill, Mike TE
Brown, Sammy LB Peterson, Deangelo TE
Hoffman-Ellis, Alex LB Alexander, Danario WR
Keller, Noah LB Campbell, Mike WR
McQuaide, Jake LS Gilbert, Charles WR
Tripucka, Travis LS Harvey, Brandyn WR
Davis, Austin QB Johnson, Nick WR

Now this is a very general elimination so don’t destroy me (and a lot of these guys will make the practice squad).  It will be interesting to see how it actually falls out.  I look forward to seeing some standout performances this weekend against the Cowboys.  Go Rams!!!

1.) Richardson will make the team and at this point could and should play more than Pead. Pead was a mistake and someone should have seen that the only way the kid got yards at Cinci was by finding space and out-running people. The NFL game is too fast for him, he fumbles, can’t catch- I watched him try a Pop Warner stutter step juke(against colts) and he was eaten up. Then he tried it two more times. He plays like a delicate flower and his yards after contact are negative. His leaping touchdown was unnecessary and dangerous. He’s pompous and will not succeed at this level. I say deal or cut Pead and or fire whoever picked him so high.
2.) Mostly 1’s and 2’s will play throughout the game against the cowboys so many guys won’t see the field. The third preseason game is usually a complete dry run and then the starters take the 4th game off.
