The key to getting the most out of Steven Jackson in 2012 is in getting him some great blocking. One source of blocking typically comes from a strong fullback. Prior to today the Rams had 2 options at fullback: Brit Miller and undrafted rookie Todd Anderson. In recent history it seems the Rams have taken the road of wishful thinking. Not this year; not with Jeff Fisher leading the team. Instead, today… the Rams signed veteran fullback Ovie Mughelli.
Mughelli was first drafted in 2003 by the Baltimore Ravens and has maintained a solid career. He scored his first touchdown in 2006 which was the first year he went All Pro (also in 2010). In 2007 he was traded to the Falcons where he played in every game but 2 through the end of 2010. He has scored more TDs since 2006, but it’s his blocking skills that got him selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl. Mughelli missed most of last season after suffering a right knee injury against Detroit in Week 7, but now in 2012 he’s healthy and ready to go.
I have to admit I’m getting excited about the 2012 season. I expect a lot of improvement over the 2011 team and I expect us to be extremely competitive in 2013. Go Rams!
