Mike Waufle: St Louis Rams 2012 Defensive Line Coach

Sunday 7/29/12 the Rams meet for the first day of (full team) training camp.   The Rams will be meeting without a Defensive Coordinator due to Gregg Williams’ involvement in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal.  The word is that a committee style coaching system will probably be used.  So, it looks like a lot of responsibility for the Rams defense (at least the defensive line) is going to fall on the shoulders of veteran coach Mike Waufle.

Waufle has been coaching defensive lines since all the way back to 1979 (at Alfred University).  He coached at the college ranks through 1997.  During that time he honed his craft at the following Universities: Utah State, Fresno State, UCLA, Oregon State, and finally at California.  In 1998 he took the jump to the NFL and has not looked back.

Waufle has had mixed success in the NFL.  He was a part of the 2007 Super Bowl Champion NY Giants (defensive line coach).  That year the Giants pass defense was ranked 8th in the NFL and their rushing defense was 31st.   In 2008 the Giants were ranked 8th and 9th respectively.  In 2009 they were ranked 15th and 14th respectively.  Both years (2008 and 2009) yielded respectable rankings, but Waufle was traded to the Oakland Raiders is 2010.  The Raiders were ranked #2 in passing defense, but dropped all the way to 31st in rushing defense that year.  In 2011 the Raiders total defense was ranked 27th.    In 2012 he has become a St Louis Ram.

This year Waufle has the very large responsibility of training up our #1 draft pick DT Michael Brockers.  Experience wise he is definitely the man for it.  As for winning… let’s hope Jeff Fisher knew what he was doing when he added Waufle to his staff.  In 2011 the Rams were ranked 31st in overall defense.  Frankly, there is nowhere to go but up.  As with many of the new players on the team; Waufle needs to step up and show us what he is made of in 2012.

Go Rams!!!
