5-Round St. Louis Mock

Draft objectives: The Rams have to build around Sam Bradford. The protection was not good, receivers like Mark Clayton, Danario Alexander and Danny Amendola were injured, Saffold missed seven games, Jason Smith missed ten, and they were trying to learn a new offense without a full offseason. Their other objective is to get better tackling at all three levels for run defense. They gotta plug up the holes of opposing offenses.

Round 1, Pick 2: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State. I don’t think Fisher’s USC ties will have any effect on them passing on Ryan Kalil. They’ll look at how much money they’ve already got invested in tackle, think about different ways to upgrade that position, but won’t pass on the chance to let Blackmon – the most physical wide receiver other than maybe Greg Little in the last seven drafts – grow with Bradford and Steven Jackson as the Triplets in St. Louis. Word on the street is that RT Jason Smith is going to be asked to take a major pay cut or get cut. If he is released, then Kalil should be in play.

Round 2, Pick 34: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis. Just getting everyone back healthy will make the secondary miles better in 2012. I think they use this pick to help fortify a run defense, that was 31st in yards allowed and tied for 27th in yards-per-attempt allowed.

Round 3, Pick 66: Brandon Mosley, T, Auburn. He helped block for 1,242 rushing yards from Michael Dyer in 2011. He’s been a defensive end and tight end in the past, and will be BPA in the third. He was selected to play in the Senior Bowl before falling ill.

Round 4: Isaiah Pead, RB, Cincinnati *. Neither Cadillac Williams nor Jerrious Norwood electrified, and it really wasn’t their fault. There weren’t great holes this season. 5’10” Pead runs a 4.42, and would be an excellent third-down option.
No 5th round pick yet, traded to the Broncos for Brandon Lloyd. If they get a 5th round compensatory pick, I think they would use it on a blocking tight end.

*Playing in the Senior Bowl today at 4 PM ET on NFL Network.
