Head Coach Candidates

Let’s run down the head coaches that have been linked and rumored to be interested in the Rams opening within a few hours of the Rams firing head coach Steve Spagnuolo:

Jeff Fisher – Fisher is an established head coach with a lot of experience.  He is a defensive coach and the most important part of his hire would be having a plan for the development of the Rams quarterback Sam Bradford.  Fisher prefers a close to the vest offensive plan and a quarterback that will not make mistakes.  Perhaps that would be the best plan for Bradford at this time because it seems like he needs to get back to basics.

Jon Gruden – Every year, Jon Gruden likes to get his ego stoked by having his name connected to a few open jobs and his only statement says he is committed to ESPN.  He wants to get back into coaching and has his big ESPN contract as insurance.  When the right job comes along, he will make the move.  I doubt the Rams job is that job.

Mike Sherman – Sherman has experience as both a head coach in the NFL with the Packers (and a bunch of division titles) and in college at Texas A&M.  He also held the GM title in Green Bay and played a major part in building their roster from the bottom up.  Sherman is an offensive guy.

Every report has the Rams chasing an established head coach.  Other veteran head coaches out there are mostly already on TV in Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy.  Both have denied interest in returning to coaching this year.  Another coach with head coaching experience who is currently an assistant is Marty Mornhenweig.

I always thought he was a good coach and am surprised he never got a second head coaching shot in the NFL…Jim Fassel. Average coaches like Norv Turner/Wade Phillips/Chan Gailey/Romeo Crennel have all gotten second or sometimes even third chances to be NFL HCs within the last several years. Why not Fassel? Fassel is currently a head coach in the United Football League and has had success, winning two championships. The Rams talked to him in 2009 before deciding on Spags. I think he would be a great fall back option if Fisher goes else where.
