No, No, Please Not AJ Smith

The Rams continue to be linked by “league sources” of Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune to current Chargers GM AJ Smith.  How a San Diego beat writer continues to get information on the thinking of Silent Stan Kroenke, when everyone else has nothing is a mystery.  But, this particular smoke has been going for long enough, it is finally time to acknowledge it.  (Granted the Rams currently have a GM in Billy Devaney and AJ Smith hasn’t yet been fired by the Chargers.)

AJ Smith would be a terrible choice for GM of the Rams.  First and foremost, he has burned bridges with so many agents and players, that it would be surprising if anyone is left in the NFL that wants to deal with him again.  He hard-balled Vincent Jackson into sitting out portions of at least 1 season and then losing him to free agency after this year.  He let Drew Brees, Michael Turner, Darren Sproles and Ladanian Tomlinson all walk in free agency after he publicly tweaked all of them in the press both anonymously and with his name directly attached.

His draft results are not much better.  Despite a expertly maneuvered stare down with Eli Manning’s camp and a called bluff that netted him Phillip Rivers and a bunch of draft picks in 2004, he has been mostly missed since then.  1st round draft picks albeit lower in the round included Larry English, Antoine Cason, Craig “Buster” Davis, Antonio Cromartie, Luis Castillo and Shawne Merriman.  Merriman and Cromartie both made the Pro Bowl, but both have fallen off their early peaks for various reasons.  Both Merriman and Luis Castillo were suspended for steroid use and both of them were not the same afterwards.

All this is just to say that AJ Smith is a bully of a GM who doesn’t draft well and makes enemies faster than he makes friends and is not someone I would want in charge of the St. Louis Rams.

I hate that people are getting behind him without knowing some of the above.

This guy let three great running backs out the door then wasted a 1st round pick on another. Sproles, LT,and Turner all went on to play superb someplace else. Spend a little money and save your picks. The Rams don’t need to be letting any talent leave.
