Jeff Fisher, Now We Are Talking

There is a lot of rumors swirling today and I’m just trying to catch up with my take on each one.  The next is Jeff Fisher being linked to the potentially open head coaching position in St. Louis.  Now this is something I can get behind.  Fisher is a great coach, having proved that over 20 years with the Oilers/Titans franchise.  His ultimate demise from Tennessee was orchestrated by the Titans owner because Fisher did not believe in Vince Young as a viable starting quarterback in the NFL.  And time has proven Jeff Fisher right, yet again.

Jeff Fisher is a defensive coach brought up in the Buddy Ryan coaching tree and also learned from George Seifert and Mike Ditka.  He has been a head coach for so long that he has learned the way to be the CEO of the franchise and such a big name would take the public attention away from the Rams front office and Silent Stan Kroenke, who prefers to live outside of the public eye.  Fisher is still on the NFL’s Competition Committee and is largely respected inside league circles.

Fisher is not flashy, he didn’t take a TV job when he was no longer coaching.  He is a solid steady coach that the players would respect and could bring the Rams defense to the next level with enough of an idea on offense through the years as a head coach (or other coaches that he trusts to delegate to).

If the Rams are going to go after a big name coach, Jeff Fisher is the coach to go after with all they have got.

Yea I’ve hear the rumors circling about Fisher going to St. Louise but I’m not sure if I buy them. Up until his departure from Tennessee he was the second highest paid coach next the Bill Belechick and I can’t see the Rams paying him that kind of salary. Also I would think Fisher would want to go to a more established team rather than the struggling Rams. He spent so much time holding together mediocre Titan teams I’m going to guess that he would want to go somewhere with more upside. The Colts, Chiefs, Giants, Cowboys, and Chargers are all teams that might be looking for coaches in 2012 and have also been in the playoffs in recent years. If I had to put money on it I would think Colts or Chiefs but we’ll see.

Jeff Fisher = 6 winning seasons out of 17 and never more than 2 in a row. No thanks! I want the Rams to be like the Steelers, Packers or Patriots…a Super Bowl contender every year. Not hope they catch lightning in a bottle once every 20 years.

How ironic that would be. Jeff Fisher to the Rams, the team that beat him in the 2000 super bowl. The 1999 Titans was his best team by far.
