Looking Ahead: Wide Receiver

With the Rams completely out of contention this season, and everyone already looking ahead to the Rams Super Bowl (also known as The NFL Draft), it is already time to take a look at where the Rams roster stands for 2012 and beyond.  Today, we are going to take a look at the wide receivers.

2012 Starters: Brandon Lloyd and [unknown] – The Rams have Brandon Lloyd on their roster, but not resigned for 2012 and they need to resign him as soon as possible.  He is the best wide receiver the Rams have had since Torry Holt and should not let him get away.  Considering he is on his 5th team in his 9-year career, it may not be a tough proposition.  See needs for how the Rams will fill the [unknown] starter spot as their 2nd starter is not on their roster currently.

2012 Backups: Injured WRs Danny Amendola and Greg Salas will be back next year to provide some slot coverage.  Austin Pettis will be back next year as well.  He has been playing better as of late as he gets more chances and stays away from attempting to return punts.  Brandon Gibson is also under contract for one more season.  The oft-injured Danario Alexander has two years left on his contract and would be a valuable weapon if ever 100% healthy, but I don’t believe he will ever get back to 100%.  Special Teams weapons Dom Curry and Nick Miller have earned themselves invites to training camp next year.  Mark Clayton probably will not be back next season after not proving himself to be fully healthy.

2012 Needs: The Rams need a wide receiver to pare with Brandon Lloyd.  They could certainly use a big target like Alshon Jeffery, but would have to pick him in the top of the 1st round.  If they don’t want to go that route, they would have to wade into the expensive free agent market for a big name like Dwayne Bowe (who probably won’t get out of KC) or Marques Colston (who has had injury problems for most of his career).  I vote for Jeffery, who would be the sexy draft pick the Rams need to get the fan base excited and improve their offense all in one fell swoop.

  1. […] 1. (2 overall) – Alshon Jeffery, WR – South Carolina.  I still can’t shake the fact that Jeffery would be the right pick despite his unproductive year.  He’s got NFL size and strength, but lacks elite NFL separation ability and speed.  This pick could change frequently, but I think this is a good start.  Blackmon is too much of a headcase for me and I just don’t believe in Michael Floyd.  Plus, I just called this in the Looking Ahead: WR post.
