Greg Cosell, the guru and producer of the NFL Matchup Show on ESPN and one of the few people who has access to the elusive “All 22” tape from the NFL was on Pro Football Talk live this week and the Rams starting quarterback Sam Bradford was a quick subject of conversation. I won’t quote Cosell directly because I was taking notes not word for word.
Cosell came to the same conclusion that a lot of us did this year in that Sam Bradford looks tentative and you cannot be tentative at the quarterback position and have a good offense. He’s checking the ball down a lot because he is lacking confidence in the 18+ yard throws unless the play is 100% clear. We can only speculate why Bradford hesitant to throw downfield, whether it is trust in his receivers, offensive line or his abilities. Cosell believes that Bradford is missing the clear picture of what should be happening downfield with his receivers. Cosell also believed that a lot of people, himself included were guilty of over-hyping Sam last year based on manageable play.
