Chris Long Restructures Contract

Mac’s Football Blog has the scoop.

The renegotiation, which included no new money, was signed on September 17. … Long’s 2011 cap number is now $9.482 million, freeing up $4 million in cap room this season. … In 2012, Long is scheduled to earn $10.06 million in base salary and due to the signing bonus, now has a cap number of $18.3075 million.

So, basically, the Rams freed up money this season ($4 million) and are going to take the hit next year.  Why do they need to free up so much money for this season?  What is the corresponding move?
