Oh, Captain, Who’s Captain?

It is very rare when the starting quarterback of an NFL is not named captain of their team. It is usually just a formality. One such exception is David Garrard of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who was promptly cut from the team. The other exception is the Rams own Sam Bradford who is exclipsed on the offensive side by running back Steven Jackson, who was named captain for the offense. Bernie Miklasz asks a very interesting question in his post today.

…do the Rams have leaders? Too many fans think that the responsibility of leadership is all on the coach, but anyone who closely follows the league realizes that players have tremendous influence in this area. Players as leaders is a significant part of the NFL culture.

Leadership is certainly more than a “rah rah” on the sidelines for the camera, but on Sunday, captain Steven Jackson was on the stationary bike trying to keep his injured quad loose and Sam Bradford was huddled with Josh McDaniels and AJ Feeley exclusively.

Some Rams veterans defended Justin King in the locker room, saying that the coverage breakdowns were not all his fault, and that’s great for locker room camraderie, there was not anyone on the sideline getting the defense up after getting burned on long pass after long pass.

The Rams captain on defense is James Hall, who also as a leftover of the pre-Spagnuolo era has been through so much losing that each initial punch by the opposition could bring back memories of very many losses.

James Hall strikes me as a quite leader and Steven Jackson’s approach is more of a lead by example type and those leadership types work great on a good team where everything is going by plan. Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo is also an “arm around the shoulder” leader, not tearing anyone up. Where is the fire and brimstone leader on their team who can light a fire under their butts?
