Browns Claim QB Thaddeus Lewis

The Rams released 3rd QB Thaddeus Lewis at the roster deadline and he was scooped up by the Cleveland Browns before he could pass through waivers and get assigned to the Rams practice squad like last season.  Former Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who is the head coach in Cleveland was on to the Rams plans, and swooped in and claimed Thad.

Thad Lewis has played well in the preseason for two years in a row with the Rams 3rd teamers against the opposition’s 2nd and 3rd teamers and probably has a very bright future ahead of him.  But, with the Rams starting their own young quarterback, the Rams do not need to keep another young, developing quarterback on the roster.  Instead, they keep AJ Feeley, who as a veteran can help Sam Bradford between serieses and assist Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels.  With a young starter, the Rams do not need a young back up quarterback, instead opting for the veteran.  If the Rams had a veteran starter, they should be working on developing a young quarterback to take the reins.  But, they are not and at this point, Thaddeus Lewis is a luxury the Rams cannot afford.  They would rather keep an extra defensive lineman, offensive lineman or wide receiver to help them win every week.

And who knows, with the way the NFL works, Thaddeus Lewis could very easily find his way back to the Rams sometime in the future.
