On The Bubble: RB Edition

With the cutdown from 90 to 80 players coming in a week, there is no better time than the present to look at the Rams roster and who will make the team, now we will take a look at the running back and (lightly used) full back positions.

Starter: Steven Jackson – Jackson is the Rams work horse even though he has shown signs of slowing down due to injury over the past two seasons.  See this previous post about Jackson’s contract status based on rushing and receiving yards this year.  Jackson does not necessarily want any rest, but a fresher Jackson would really help the Rams at the end of the year and at the end of games.

Backup: Cadillac Williams –  Williams is that rest and has acquitted himself well in the preseason. He runs hard between the tackles and can break tackles in the secondary.  He’s a great running back for spelling Jackson for a series or two every other quarter.

3rd RB: Jerious Norwood – Norwood is the Rams home run threat and will have more of a place in the Rams offense than any previous 3rd running back for the Rams.  Additionally, he is slightly under rated when running between the tackles.  He can do it, but he is much better in space.

Depth: Keith Toston – Toston is a practice squad candidate and has acquitted himself well in the reps he has been given in the first two preseason games.  He always runs had, especially between the tackles, but does not always have the agility to make the open tackler miss.

Depth: Chase Reynolds – With all the veterans above him and little chance to get snaps in the preseason game, Reynolds will be on the outside looking in when the cuts are complete.

FullBacks: Britt Miller and Van Sturmon – The Rams may not keep any fullbacks on the roster as the new offense emphasizes single back sets and any need lead blocker will be filled by a tight end on specific plays.  If one fullback makes the roster (which I doubt) it will be Britt Miller.
