2011 Offseason Acquisition Analysis – Post Preseason Game 1

Here’s a look at some of the Rams’ key 2011 acquisitions after we have (potentially) received our first look at each of them as a St Louis Ram.

OLB Ben Leber:  Ben signed a 1 year $1.25M contract.  He previously played for the Vikings and is a pretty solid veteran player. He’s coming into his 10th season and I would count this as a good pick up.

OT Quinn Ojinnaka: Quinn was a 2006 5th round draft pick.  He played for the Patriots last year and has been a backup player most of his career.  I couldn’t find salary info for him, but he shouldn’t be a big ticket item.  For what he does this could be a good pick.

RB Cadillac Williams:  At first I wasn’t really jazzed about this signing.  Carnell is a talented, but inconsistent running back who is coming off of a knee injury.  But at $685k for a single season what can we lose?  There is nothing but upside here.  Saturday he looked explosive in the opener with 11 carries for 40 yards and a TD (plus 1 reception).

LB Brady Poppinga:  I didn’t find any contract information here.  Brady hasn’t done anything since 2008.  He had 1 solo tackle on Saturday.  Seems like a mediocre signing.

DE Justin Bannan:  Bannan has been around the NFL since 2002.  He has formally been on 3 teams and has average stats.  He signed a 3 year deal for $8.5M.  He is probably past his prime so I’m not sure why he is getting the big money.  Good news is that the Rams are finally willing to shell out some cheddar to build the team.  Hopefully, he gives us a couple good years.  He had 2 solo tackles on Saturday.

WR Mike Sims-Walker: Mike inked a 1 year deal for $3.7M.  He is a strong wide receiver, but not a super star.  He currently has a minor groin injury and did not play in Saturday’s game.  We desperately need help in the WR position.  I’d love to see him make a big impact and stay around for more than a year.

CB Al Harris: We all know this man.  Al is a veteran Pro Bowl CB.  In 2009 he injured his knee against the 49Niners. Last year he only played in 3 games.  His biggest impact will probably be off the field.  This guy is a winner and it is good to have him around (for 1 year).

OG Harvey Dahl:  Harvey is a solid and versatile offensive lineman.  We picked him up from the Falcons for 4 years.  I couldn’t find the contract amount, but I’d pay money for this guy.  It makes mama happy to sign another good lineman.

DE Quintin Mikell:  We signed Quintin to a 4 year $27M deal.  And you know what?  I am perfectly good with it.  This guy is the real deal.  He was with the Eagles since 2003 and he has literally gotten better every single year.  He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2009 and his stats were even better in 2010.  On Saturday he came out strong with an interception and 25 yard return.  “Quintin.  Welcome to the team.  We love you man.”

OLB Zac Diles:  Zack is a solid LB from the Houston Texans.  Saturday he made 3 tackles (2 solo).  Mr. Diles is another good acquisition.

DT Daniel Muir:  We picked up Daniel on a one year $1.85 million deal. He had a good 2009 season for the Colts, but neither the Colts nor his former team the Packers were interested in keeping him around.  This could be a questionable deal, but since it’s only for 1 year there are no real worries here.

RB Jerious Norwood:  Jerious, formerly with the Falcons signed with us for one year at $1.8M.  Like Cadillac, he is also coming off a knee injury.  He has average career stats and honestly I am not super happy about this signing.  I’d rather spend the money on a WR.  He looked pretty good Saturday with 8 carries for 37 yards.

And finally, speaking of wide receivers, a special shout out to rookie WR Lance Kendricks.  Lance was the 47th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin.  This guy was not on my radar, but he looked good on Saturday.  Lance contributed 5 catches for 47 yards and a TD.  Keep an eye on this guy.
