Rams In the Hunt For Osi Umenyiora

Yes, you read that headline correctly.  The St. Louis Rams, who drafted a defensive end in the 1st round in 2010 and 2008 and have a veteran defensive end in James Hall who is coming off a career year, have expressed interest in available New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora.  The New York Daily News has the drop:

A few sources believe the team to watch in this is the Rams, where the obvious tie is their coach – former Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He knows what Umenyiora can do and how to use him, he knows Umenyiora will gladly play for him, and the Rams reportedly have plenty of cap room to spend.

We have seen a lot of ex-Giants linked to the Rams, but this one makes more sense because Umenyiora was a defensive player when current Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator.  Offensive players from the Giants do not make sense for the Rams, but defensive players is another story.  Both sides are very familiar with each other and would be able to work together from Day 1.

Huge downside here is the Giants are asking for a 1st round pick for Umenyiora.  No one is going to trade a 1st rounder to the Giants, so eventually they will come down to a 2nd or 3rd rounder.  The Rams value their draft picks highly, but I would make the move in a second for a 3rd rounder and would probably make the move for a 2nd rounder.

However, Umenyiora also comes with the demands of a huge new contract.  Chris Long’s rookie contract will be up after next year and will need to be renegotiated and the Rams already have 3 huge contracts on the books with Long, QB Sam Bradford and tackle Jason Smith.  The New York Daily News thinks they have room, but the previous post on the tweet from the St. Louis Rams twitter account seems to indicate otherwise.
