The Rams select WR Austin Pettis out of Boise State with their 3rd round pick. Let’s take a look at the scouting reports on Pettis from around the web.
Positives: Good red zone target, uses his size to his advantage and has good body control when he’s in the air… Good concentration and focus when tracking the ball… Above-average hands, catches the ball with his arms extended, doesn’t let the ball get into his body… Shows a willingness to make plays across the middle of the field… Great route runner, finds ways to get open… Solid run blocker, walls off his defender… Consistently wins jump ball battles… Prototypical possession receiver, similar in many ways to current Texans receiver Kevin Walter… Led all receivers at the combine with a 3.88 shuttle time.
Austin Pettis doesn’t have the measureables that a lot of receivers have, and doesn’t have elite athletic ability, but Pettis is a straight up football player who can flat-out make plays. Whenever Boise needed a big play over the past 3 years, Pettis’ number was called, and he always seemed to come through. While he will never be a dominant #1 receiver in the league, Pettis will be a very successful possession receiver who can work the middle, and be a big, reliable target for his quarterback.
Strengths:
Prototypical height. Good overall strength and has the frame to add more weight. A polished route runner. Does a great job selling fakes and shaking coverage despite his limited quickness and agility.
