Rams Players Remain in Training Despite Lockout

No one exactly knows when the 2011 season is going to start, but it’s not stopping the Rams and their players from working out and getting ready for the season anyway.

“It’s the same amount of work,” veteran linebacker Na’il Diggs told The Telegraph. “I’m doing the same thing I would be doing at Rams Park and getting the same thing accomplished. It’s just not under the supervision of the coaches and trainers.”

Many of the players have organized their own training sessions. Quarterback Sam Bradford and most of the receivers plan on working out together in Texas. The linebackers have been training individually but will unite for group sessions in May if the lockout is still in place. Cornerback Bradley Fletcher told The Telegraph that he’s working out in St. Louis, but several of his teammates are “scattered around the country.” Safety Craig Dahl has stayed in St. Louis, but cornerback Jerome Murphy is in Florida and starting cornerback Ron Bartell is in Arizona. Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson has spent a significant amount of time working out in Oregon.

The team’s union rep, offensive lineman Adam Goldberg, has organized workout sessions for the offensive linemen in St. Charles, Mo.

Tackles Rodger Saffold and Jason Smith, center Jason Brown, center/guard Hank Fraley and tackle Ryan McKee, a third-year player from Southern Mississippi who was on the practice squad all of last season, have all joined Goldberg and his personal trainer Matt Pirtle on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Emerge Fitness. The group also works out together three more times each week.

“That group, more than any, is so important that we train together,” said Goldberg, who added that they would begin more “traditional football-related” activities this week.
