Free Agency and Stuff

It is the time of year when we would normally like to talk about the free agency.  Not this year though.  Oh we’ll talk about it, but it’s more just a matter of keeping up appearances.  We are not going to have a full season of football next year.  Freakin’ greedy owners and players.  For the moment we’ll pretend it matters though.  And it would matter since the Rams have 15 players joining free agency in 2011.

There is another caveat to this whole ‘it would matter’ scenario.  I forget that the vast majority of Rams players are mostly ex practice squad players from other teams.  The rest are young drafted talents that have yet to leave an indelible imprint on the Rams.  So, it really doesn’t matter if we lose these guys.  As I scan the list, I only see a couple I would like to keep:

WR Mark Clayton – 2010 was his first season with the Rams.  Prior, he did a pretty solid job in Baltimore from 2005-2009.  In 2006 he had receptions coming in just under 1,000 yards.  He showed promise this year with the Rams and I hope to see a lot more out of him in the future.

Tackles – I’m not a huge fan of these guys (I don’t mean tackles.  I love tackles.  I mean these specific tackles.), but I think this is the type of position where it’s important to have continuity.  For that reason, I’d like to keep 2 out of the 3 OTs that hit free agency (Goldberg and Setterstrom).

And that is about it.  As usual that means the Rams have a lot of needs.  We have been very conservative in the Free Agency in the past.  Again, let’s pretend we’re playing ball in 2011.  I’d love to see the Rams pick up some high caliber talent.  It’s time.  We’ve played it cheap for quite a while now.  A few of the pieces have started to fall into place.  It’s time to start investing some money and making a push for the post season.

But noooo… no football for us.  Instead, to Adrian Peterson I’d like to say “shame on you”.  So worried about how your employer is treating you.  Ahhh… poor Adrian.  Hey, guy who runs with a ball, “there is a freakin recession going on…”  How about you stop feeling sorry for your rich behind and get a clue?  If the owners and players had any sense of the times we are living in they’d take that billion dollars and donate it.  I don’t know…. Maybe to some place that really needs it… like maybe JAPAN.

But hey…  what do I know?
