Shurmur Says the Rams Didn’t Execute in Season Finale in Seattle

The St.Louis Post-Dispatch had a piece on the new coach of the Browns, that being former Rams OC Pat Shurmur. They talk about the last game of the season, a loss in Seattle to the Seahawks that cost the Rams a shot to win the NFC West.

“Well, we lost,” Shurmur replied in his typical understated manner. “I think you can point to a lot of different things. We probably didn’t execute quite as well as we would have liked to, and we fell short obviously on the scoreboard. I’ll leave it at that.”

The prime-time loss cost the Rams the NFC West title and their first playoff berth since the 2004 season. Shurmur doesn’t think stage fright was an issue.

“I just think that anybody involved in that game just wishes we played better,” Shurmur said.

Shurmur didn’t have much time to mull over that wrenching loss. By the end of that week he had interviewed in Cleveland, and he has been knee-deep in his Browns head-coaching duties almost ever since.

“I always had hoped that I’d have an opportunity to do this,” Shurmur said. “I’d been given good advice all along to just keep doing your job and when the time is right somebody will call. To be in this situation with these people, with (Mike) Holmgren as the president, and (general manager) Tom Heckert, and all the great pieces in place, I’m just honored to be here.”
