Julio Jones Is Not Dropping To the Rams

It is still very early in the draft process, the NFL Combine is still a ways away and even the Super Bowl has not even occurred yet.  However, the public perceptions of the Rams needs and the draft boards have mostly gelled around the marriage of Julio Jones and the Rams.  Big time mock drafters from ESPN Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have both linked the Rams and Jones.  Additionally, highly regarded draftniks Walter Football have updated their mock draft giving Julio Jones to the Rams at 14. Do not get me wrong, I would love to have Julio Jones catching passes from Sam Bradford, but I just don’t see Jones dropping that far in the draft.

Let’s take a quick look at the NFL draft order and their respective needs.  AJ Green, the top wide receiver on the board will be picked in the top 5 and in the 6th slot at the very bottom of his range.  If Green is picked before 6th selection, Cleveland could make a move there to give another playmaker to Colt McCoy.  Moving on from there let’s take a look at the next picks and where Rams fans should be holding their breath.

7. San Francisco – SF has Crabtree, Ginn and Josh Morgan so they are probably set.

8. Tennessee – The Titans have Kenny Britt, but not much opposite him and being that Jones is a willing blocker, he would be an asset as a downfield blocker for Chris Johnson.  Jones is plausible here.

9. Dallas – Jerry Jones loves playmakers, but they still have Miles Austin and Roy Williams.  Jones could go here, but I would be surprised.

10. Washington – This is the number 1 best position for Jones.  The Redskins have nobody at wide receiver and need a #1 receiver that Jones will become.  Jones is a very strong possibility here.

11. Houston – If Jones slips past the Skins, he will slip past Houston as well.  Houston needs to spend all their picks on the defense.

12. Minnesota – If the Vikings keep Sidney Rice, this is probably a no go, especially with Harvin.  However, if Sidney Rice gets away the Vikings will be licking their lips if Jones drops here.  Plausible here.

13. Detroit – The Lions got by with Megatron and everyone else.  They could add a valuable #2 receiver here in Jones.  Certainly plausible that Jones could go off the board here, especially if a WR hungry team attempts to jump the Rams to get Jones.

Looking at the draft order, #6 and #10 are pretty solid spots to draft a wide receiver, so if AJ Green lasts until #6, then it is still a long shot for Julio Jones to last to #14 and the waiting arms of the Rams.  Especially because every team in the league knows that the Rams need a wide receiver and #12 and #13 are slots ripe for trade up scenarios.

I think that most of these early mock drafts do not attempt to go down the draft in order, but link players that make sense to each team.  This way they can work from a starting point this early in draft season.  That being said, there are only a few scenarios in which Julio Jones will drop to the Rams at #14 and I do not think that it will go down that way on draft d

OK Article. Reasoning doesn’t play out without more in depth look at who those other teams are more likely to target, needwise.
