Week 16 Preview: Rams v 49ers

After two losses to two potential playoff teams, the Rams have the ripe opportunity to destroy the 49ers playoff hopes once and for all.  Both teams are facing a must win situation in this game.  It should be interesting to see how each team responds.

Whattup West Coast!  Basically everywhere west of Chicago and Atlanta is getting this game.  Including you LA!  Finally.  Check out the map for your local area.

What to Watch For

  • No Gore – The Rams have had trouble containing Frank Gore in the past and since he is on IR ending his season, they will rely on Anthony Dixon and Brian Westbrook.  That will be a much easier task, but the Rams will have to contain two different types of runners.
  • 49ers Quarterback – We still do not know who will be starting at quarterback for the 49ers.  Singletary even hinted that both quarterbacks could play.  The Rams would prefer Alex Smith than his considerably more mobile counterpart Troy Smith.  Troy’s ability to get out of the pocket and extend the play hurts the Rams pass rush and the Rams secondary cannot cover for that long.
  • Big Plays – The Rams tried to limit the big plays against New Orleans and Kansas City, but two big plays (one in the run game and one in the passing game) broke the Rams backs against the Chiefs.  The 49ers had a lot of explosive plays in the Rams last meeting.  Allowing those big plays kept the 49ers in the game and allowed them to take the lead late in the game.
  • Alexander, Gibson and Amendola –  The Rams have gotten less and less from these three receivers now that opposing defenses know how to cover their frequently used routes.  The Rams will need to shake up the route combinations to keep the defense guessing and get their wide receivers open because they are not good enough to beat a defense that knows what is coming.
  • 49ers Defense –  San Diego was able to spread out the 49ers and get good matchups with their running backs and tight ends against the 49ers.  The Rams will need to do the same since the 49ers sport one of the most talented front sevens in football (slightly less talented now that LB Travis LaBoy is also on IR).  The Rams will need to spread out the 49ers to run the football effectively and get good matchups with tight ends on the rush linebackers of the 49ers.

If the Rams lose this game, they will need to root for the Cardinals to beat the 49ers in Week 17.  The Rams have lost to the 49ers 5  straight times.  The Rams will need to stand up and beat their bitter rivals or else their playoff chances will move to “slim to none”.

Go Rams!
