RamView: Week 15 – Running Back

Anybody familiar with RamView knows I respect the hell out of Steven Jackson (19-67 rush, 5-37 recv). But he was almost a limitation on the Ram offense this week and had a pretty quiet game. He appeared to have no outside speed at all. He was never a threat to break anything outside despite some big running lanes. Nice holes were often closing by the time he hit them. No one drives the pile better than Steven, and I think he had to do it all 22 carries today, often for good gains, too, 3, 4, 5 yards. He squeezed through a tight space for a 5-yard TD run in the 4th. But that was almost his longest run of the day, which went for 8. When the defense is just stacking the middle of the field, you’re just running your head into a brick wall. And the Chiefs didn’t have to respect any threat of outside running today. Playcalling isn’t blameless, but Jackson didn’t show the speed or burst to make that work anyway, and we all know by now the Rams don’t have a, well, Jamaal Charles-type they can bring off the bench to extend a run defense. Despite Jackson’s worthy (as always) efforts, that’s a guy the Rams really could have used today.
