RamView: Week 15 – Receivers

The Chiefs challenged the Ram receivers to beat them today and they couldn’t answer the call. Five different receivers caught short passes on the opening FG drive, but when the Chiefs took away familiar routes for Laurent Robinson and Danny Amendola to snuff the next possession, the receivers had to find a gear practically none of them have. And for these guys to get open on longer routes, Bradford was going to need a lot more time in the pocket than he was getting. The Chiefs broke up a couple of passes for Brandon Gibson (3-29), including a real crusher late in the 3rd that would have gotten the Rams off their goal line and given them some momentum. Most of Amendola’s (7-60) production was on the Rams’ TD drive, where he had 4 catches. He started it with a 15-yard smoke route behind nice blocking by Robinson, and got the Rams in close with a sliding over-the-shoulder catch for 15. Other than his blocking, Robinson (2-8) was once again a non-factor. Daniel Fells (4-47) was reliable as a possession receiver and was the only receiver who could see his way to getting open very much. Danario Alexander’s (0-0) near-exclusion from the gameplan continues to mystify. Rams beat writer Jim Thomas said he was on the field for about 20 plays, 15 more times than I saw him on the field. They only even started throwing his way in the 4th, usually deep desperation stuff. He also failed to come up with a clean catch on a slant that would have kept a drive alive in the 4th. Amendola seems to be the only one the Rams trust as  a go-to receiver. Today showed once again that the Rams badly need to come up with some alternatives.
