RamView: Week 13 – Receivers

Another blue-collar day for the receiving corps; no one had a big game, but everybody chipped in a little. They had trouble getting open early. Danario Alexander (2-20) had a quiet game. He got bumped off his slant route on an incompletion that killed the Rams’ first possession. After leading receiver Brandon Gibson’s (6-54) sideline catch put the Rams in scoring position for the first time, they settled for a FG after Alexander was blanketed by Greg Toler in the end zone on another incompletion. The passing game didn’t find its rhythm until the final 2:00 of the 1st half. Gibson got the drive going with catches of 11 and 15, the second one in a crowd, and Laurent Robinson (2-24) had a key 14-yard sideline catch to get the Rams in close. Two key plays helped the Rams get up 16-6 in the 3rd. Danny Amendola (1-17) motioned and got his man leaning the wrong way at the snap, which let him take a 2-yard pass up the middle of the field for a big gain on 3rd-and-5. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-3, crossing patterns got Alexander open on a drag route for a 16-yard gain. Robinson, no small thanks to a healthy pushoff, gained 11.0001 on a 3rd-and-11 sideline comeback to keep the Rams’ final FG drive alive. The Rams put the game away in the final 5:00 in decidedly blue-collar fashion. The TE’s weren’t very involved in the passing game, and Billy Bajema (2-39) had a drop earlier, but he started the Rams’ last possession with a 13-yard catch on their favorite rollout pass play. Then Robinson made a key block on Joey Porter to spring Jackson for 9, after which Bajema got out the frosting and put it on the cake. While play action suckered the Big Dead to the left, Bradford and Bajema rolled right, and out in the flat lonelier than a scalper at a Lions game, Bajema caught a short pass and rumbled 26 yards with it inside the Arizona 10 for the coups de grace. Efficiency trumped field-stretching today, but Rams receivers still made some of the game’s key plays.
