Rams And 49ers Tiebreakers

With the 49ers now only 1 game out of first place in the NFC West and games against Seattle and the Rams remaining, lets take a quick look at the 49ers tiebreakers.

1. Head to Head – The 49ers currently lead this category thanks to their home win earlier this season.  The Rams have another game to even up the season series.  Advantage 49ers.

2. Divisional Record – The Rams are 1-2 and the 49ers are 2-1 in the division.  Each team has the other 3 teams in the division still remaining on their schedule.  49ers have 2 home division games and 1 away division game left.  The Rams have 1 and 2.  Advantage 49ers.

3. Common Games – The 49ers are 5-5 in common games with a tough matchup with San Diego coming up.  The Rams are 4-5 with games against KC and the Saints remaining. Push.

4. Conference Games – The 49ers are 2-6 in conference games.  The Rams are 3-5 in conference games.  Both teams have 4 games remaining in the conference.  Advantage Rams.

This could all be rendered moot if the Rams and Chargers both beat the 49ers giving them 9 losses, but the tie breakers may still be important.

Actually, only the first two conditions matter, unless there is a third team involved. If the Rams beat or tie Seattle in the final game, they own the tiebreaker based on head-to-head competition. If the Seahawks win it, they tie that one and win based on better division record, as they will have at least four wins and the Rams will have no more than three. If the Rams and Seahawks are within a game of each other entering that contest, the winner of the game wins the division, assuming there is not a three-way tie.

Oops, this comment was intended for the Seattle Seahawks tiebreaker note.
