RamView: Week 8 – Quarterback

If I were Sam Bradford, I’d spend a lot of my bye week at pubs hustling people at darts, because he threw a lot of them today – short, precise passes into tight windows. Pounding the Carolina defense with a flurry of jabs, Bradford started the game 8-for-9 and was 18-for-22 at halftime. Hitting pass after pass in the Rams’ horizontal passing game eventually opened up the vertical passing game, and Bradford finished with his most efficient game as a pro: 25-32, 191 yards, 2 TD, 112.4 passer rating. He and Danny Amendola had the quick out down to a science, hitting it several times before hitting it again for the Rams’ first TD. Carolina was backed off of Amendola on 3rd-and-goal at the two, making that play as open in this offense as any time Marshall Faulk was covered by a LB back in the Greatest Show on Earth days. The TD was set up by Bradford drilling Laurent Robinson on the sideline at the Panther 10 with a 16-yard pass, and the downfield game stayed limbered up. In the 4th, he hit Brandon Gibson on a corner route with a perfect pass for 33. On 3rd-and-18 a few plays later, he rolled and hit Daniel Fells, who wasn’t even open, and Fells did the rest, rumbling downfield through the Panther secondary for a 23-yard TD that essentially put the game away. Sam Bradford’s game continues to mature. This was his most accurate-throwing game this year so far. He showed terrific patience in the pocket, making several plays after waiting for a receiver to come open instead of immediately going for the checkdown. And his mobility continues to be a revelation. Bradford opens up the offense with his ability to throw on the run, and he avoided many negative plays today by either scrambling or just by getting outside of the pocket and throwing the ball away. By showing composure a lot of veteran QBs don’t even have, Sam Bradford’s keeping the Rams moving forward.
