RamView: Isaac Bruce Ceremony

Whether the Rams won or lost, the headline for today was always going to be the retirement of the #80 jersey in honor of Isaac Bruce, and, though Isaac’s the only name on the banner, Henry Ellard and Tom Fears. The Rams staff have done enough of these ceremonies now that they’ve finally gotten good at it. The video package honoring Bruce’s career was well-done, if a little short. There were (apparently) fans lined up on either side of a path for the Rams’ luminaries to walk down from the far corner of the field. That was a nice touch, even if Dick Vermeil’s walk took long enough to make us wonder if the game would start on time. Another nice touch would have been, even though the ceremony properly was supposed to focus on Bruce, to introduce individually the former players in attendance. I could identify Torry Holt, Rickey Proehl, Ernie Conwell, Roland Williams, Orlando Pace, Adam Timmerman, Andy McCollum, and Keith Lyle, and I got help on Ray Agnew, Dre Bly and Az Hakim, but more players were there. Marshall Faulk, Trent Green and Kurt Warner, who got by far the biggest reaction, were some of Isaac’s teammates who gave pre-taped congratulations that were played during breaks in the game, instead of commercials in many cases, to the Rams’ credit. Mike Martz introduced Isaac in rousing fashion, and Isaac’s acceptance speech was as humble and understated as the man himself. (Joke of the day in the crowd: Bradford’s timeout with 6:25 to go in the first quarter was a tribute to Martz.) The Rams wore their throwback uniforms for the occasion, and the cheerleaders dodged their professional obligation to wear Halloween costumes by wearing #80 jerseys instead. Well-played, ladies. I’ll be back on your case next year! Atogwe leading the Bob ‘n Weave in the end zone after his late pick was the icing on the cake of a near-perfect day at the Dome, a celebration of the Rams’ past greatness and their future promise.
