I Do Not Get It

The Rams today traded potentially promising defensive end Hall Davis to the Redskins and got fullback/h-back/tight end Dennis Morris from the Redskins in two different deals for conditional draft picks.  Hall Davis was drafted in the 5th round by the Rams and Morris in the 6th round by the Redskins.

Morris was being used mostly as a blocking back based on his size: 6’2″253 lbs and did not impress in the preseason or training camp as the initial report indicated.  Morris was not even going to make the team and would have been cut on roster cutdown day on September 4th and available for nothing if the Rams still wanted him.

Hall Davis was working exclusively at defensive end and the Redskins will use him at outside linebacker in the 3-4.  Davis had two sacks against Cleveland in the second preseason game in two quarters of action.

In the NFL, pass rushers are gold and the Rams had one that showed some flashes, even if it was against second and third string Browns pass protectors.  They gave up on Davis before the preseason was even over after spending a 5th round draft pick on him.  Davis had upside and was projectable, there must have been more than met the eye with Davis.  Was he a problem in the locker room?  Did the Rams coaches find him uncoachable?  Pass rushers are much more valuable to an NFL team than fullbacks or H-backs or even tight ends.

If we place Morris in his most valuable position of tight end, the Rams already have two other draft picks plus two veterans and a free agents pick up ahead of him on the depth chart.  If he is a full back, he is at best Mike Karney’s backup and at worse a blocking back to take the hits in the final preseason game.

I have no idea why the Rams would give up on Hall Davis so quickly.  He was very raw, but even had a good preseason game under his belt.

Can anyone make heads or tails of this deal?

After the jump are a few highlight videos of the newest Ram Dennis Morris.  Will he last the week?  Watch and decide.
