RamView: Preseason Week 1 – Cheers

* Waiver bait: There’s still time, but I doubt enough for Marquis Johnson to make up the light-years he needs to make up at CB. He may be the only draft pick who doesn’t make the team, though. Chris Chamberlain showed little development as a LB and could have to explode on special teams to stick ahead of Hull and others. Brandon McRae and Dominique Curry didn’t even get looked at in a WR battle that was supposedly wide open.

* Upon further review: The awesomely-named Clete Blakeman led the officiating crew in a game I don’t think was all that challenging to call. They had some spots challenged but appeared to get them all right. Long got held badly on one play, but the call the crowd liked least was a pretty ticky-tack hands-to-the-face call on Quincy Butler that gave up a first down on 3rd-and-12. Still, a passable job, and far better than some officiating I’ve already seen this weekend. (The refs in the Panthers-Ravens game were atrocious.)

* Cheers: The Bradford effect didn’t appear to extend to preseason attendance. I didn’t see any Oklahoma jerseys, or that many Rams jerseys, for that matter. Attendance was at best in the high 20K’s. I’d like to thank the idiots who scheduled the Cardinals game for 3:10. Their game let out at the same time Rams fans were trying to get into downtown, making for awful traffic. My nephew, who’s been to three games in his life and is already making fun of Antoine Thompson, and I made it to our seats a minute and a half before kickoff. Bradford got a big ovation when he came in, though, and when he completed his first pass, it briefly sounded like Kurt Warner had just hit Rickey Proehl to put the Rams ahead of Tampa. Like a college player standing on his Combine times on his pro day, the Dome is standing on last year’s renovations. The only upgrade I’m aware of (and no, I didn’t seek out any “healthy” food) is Rampage the Foam Rubber Ram, who maybe has been grounded by the sheriff, because he didn’t even fire the T-shirt gun that I saw. Halftime was pee-wee football, as is traditional. And the information that the Rams cheerleaders shot this year’s calendar in some park somewhere in MISSOURI – I’m not even sure they went to as exotic a location as the Ozarks – does not lead me to have hope there is much of a budget for Halloween wear yet again this season. Anybody want to take up a collection?
