Training Camp Position Breakdown: Guards

Don’t forget to vote on the Rams weekly approval polling here!  Polls are open for a few more days.

Let’s take a look now at the Rams group of guards.

Jacob Bell – The Rams signed Jacob Bell to a big free agent deal before the 2010 season and so far in his time with the Rams is play has been up and down to say the least. He is more of a finesse guard and benefits from strong players on either side of him. Pencil him in at left guard for the 2010 season as long as he is healthy.

Roger Allen III – Roger was a feel good story last season as he was a surprise addition to the roster. Allen got his first playing time in the M.A.S.H. unit that was the Rams offensive line in 2009 late in the season and got attacked by the turf monster within one half of his first appearance. He tore his ACL and was lost for the year. Allen should make the roster again this year as a backup guard.

The rest of the guard group is after the jump!

John Greco – The Rams (and I) have expected a lot from the mega-sized guard both in 2009 and in 2010, but he has trouble staying on the field. Greco has everything you would want in a guard. He is big, strong and an immovable object in the middle of the line. The Rams just need him to stay healthy and get experience before he can win any competition for the right guard position.

Adam Goldberg (Also a Tackle) – Adam Goldberg was covered in the tackle section and is an important member of both the tackle and guard groups.

Hank Fraley and Jason Brown (Also Centers) – Hank Fraley and Jason Brown will be covered in the center group.  Fraley made his preseason debut for the Rams at center, but he also has the flexibility to play guard.  Jason Brown was signed and played all of 2009 at center, but opened the preseason at guard.

Mark Lewis – The rookie free agent out of Oregon was placed on the IR with an ankle injury, ending his season.

Mark Setterstrom – The oft-injured Setterstrom got a head start on the year and is already on the IR.  Just kidding Mark!
