We will cover the position battles in camp at every position in much further detail, but today I was reading a recap of the Rams scrimmage on the St. Louis Post Dispatch online and a few notes about wide receiver Brandon McRae out of Miss State jumped out of the screen at me.
One of the good things was the 60-yard touchdown that McRae scored during a live period. The Mississippi State product got behind the defense, hauled in a pinpoint pass from second-year quarterback Keith Null and outraced cornerback Kevin Dockery to the end zone.
“It’s been awhile,” McRae said. “I’ve just got to keep on improving in certain places. … But I’ll take that any day.”
Later, a 20-yard catch by the 6-foot-3, 207-pound McRae was nullified by a penalty. “He’s a big wide receiver that’s been making plays,” Spagnuolo said. “He’s a young guy who’s got a lot to learn. But he’s done some good things.”
This is not the first time we have heard praise about McRae. None other than Steven Jackson singled him out with another receiver in his interview with Michael Silver.
“We have two young receivers that have really impressed me – they’re both rookie free agents.”
…I just know their numbers: No. 15 and No. 83.”They are Dominique Curry from California (Pa.) and Brandon McRae from Mississippi State…
McRae is a talented player, who’s stock dropped when he had a serious leg injury late in his junior season and caught only 14 passes his senior year. He transferred into Mississippi State before he junior season, so he only played about one full season with the Bulldogs.
The Rams are jammed at receiver with a ton of bodies and the preaseason should be very interesting to see who gets reps and who stays on the squad. The Rams in 2009 were happy to keep 5 WRs on the active roster and 4 active on Sundays. I cannot see them making that move in 2010.
The Rams wide receiver corps should look something like this: Donnie Avery, Laurent Robinson, Mardy Gilyard, Danny Amendola, Brandon Gibson, Keenan Burton with a lot of talented players looking for playing time including Brooks Foster and Brandon McRae.
Keep an eye on McRae when he comes on the field in the Rams first preseason game on Saturday night.
Brandon McRae’s highlight reel from his junior season at Mississippi State is after the jump!
