Rams Interested in Supplemental Draftee Unga

The Rams will send their West Coast area scout, Drew Casani (H/T Howard Balzer of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat) to see Harvey Unga, former RB of BYU workout.  Unga has declared for the 2010 NFL Supplemental Draft which will be held in mid July.  Unga voluntarily withdrew from BYU for breaking a school honor code.  His violation?  Having pre-martial sex with his then girlfriend of 3 years.  I’m not sure why all that information is our business, but whatever.  He’s in the Supplemental Draft and the Rams are interested in him and scouting him.  I’m pretty sure his violation will not prevent the Rams from pursuing him.  And it is also important to note that Unga voluntarily withdrew from the school – he was not kicked out.

Unga is a 6’0″ 237 lb bruiser who led BYU with 3,455 yards and 36 touchdowns.  Some see him as a fullback in the NFL, but the Rams with a need for depth at the running back position could be interested in him there.

The Supplemental Draft is held in the summer for NFL-eligible players who for one reason or another find themselves kicked off or released from college teams.  The draft works like a bid process, the team that “bids” the highest round pick gets the player.  The team that gets the player then forfeits that round pick in the next full NFL draft.  Last season, the Washington Redskins selected Jeremy Jarmon with their 3rd round pick in the Supplemental Draft and forfeited their 3rd rounder in the 2010 NFL Draft.
