OJ Atogwe Thought Experiment

Let’s think quickly about OJ Atogwe for a minute here on this Friday.  The Rams designated Atogwe as a “right of first refusal” restricted free agent earlier this offseason. (which seems like a million years ago, but this is neither here nor there.)  Any other team in the NFL could sign Atogwe without giving the Rams any draft pick compensation.  They would only have to craft a deal that the Rams would not be interesting in matching.  That is a very simple process for all the NFL teams who have groups of staff designated to negotiating and crafting contracts.

If Atogwe has been available for a song since early spring, why has he not taken any visits to other teams or gotten any offers?  Are his injuries scaring off other teams?  Is Atogwe not as well regarded around the NFL as he is within the Rams fan base?

And more importantly, is there any reason Atogwe would suddenly receive a lot of offers if the Rams cut him loose on June 1st?  He can be had for free now, why should that chance on June 1st?

What do you think?  There are no right answers, I’m just thinking out loud.

I think that the rest of the league knows he’s a good player, but they won’t be willing to give up anything higher than 3rd to get him. In my opinion, I think that’s not enough for a trade, and we should go ahead and sew him up. Don’t screw up like with the tye hill trade.
