In With The New

In the Alex Barron swap, the Rams will receive outside linebacker Bobby Carpenter.  This trade benefits the Rams because they are able to get a talented and underachieving player at a position of need.

Carpenter did not feature much in the Cowboys defense as he was not a good fit for their 3-4 outside linebacker positions.  The outside linebackers in a 3-4 are used mostly for pass rushing and Carpenter is more of a traditional 4-3 outside linebacker who can cover tight ends and running backs down the field and out of the backfield.

Carpenter was used only in passing situations at outside linebacker for the Cowboys.  He should compete or share time with Na’il Diggs at outside linebacker for the Rams.  Carpenter is talented as he was taken with the 18th pick in the 2006 draft.

The Rams sorely needed talented players on their defense in 2009, and have improved their talent at weak-side linebacker with this acquisition.
