Free Agent Fever – WRs III

It has taken 3 articles, but we are now wrapping up our analysis of UFA wide receivers.  I have left a couple out, but here is the cream of the bottom of the crop.

1 Kevin Curtis – Curtis was drafted by the Rams in 2003.  He was injured his first year and then spent the next 3 behind Ram’s superstar receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce.  Even with that in mind, he put up good numbers with 132 receptions for 1,701 yards (2004-2006).  Curtis signed with the Eagles in 2006 and had a breakout year.  He caught 77 passes for 1,110 yards and 6 TDs.  On his own way to stardom; he was then inactive much of 2008 due to various injuries/ailments.  In 2009 he had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and has missed twelve games.

2 David Clowney – Clowney was drafted by the Packers in 2007, but was picked up by the Jets in the beginning of the 2007 season.  In 2007 he was relegated to the practice squad and then was out most of 2008 due to an injured collar bone.  In 2009 he played in 10 games with 14 receptions for 191 yards.

3 Devard Darling – Darling was drafted by the Ravens in 2004.  In the first 3 year with the team he did absolutely nothing.  In 2007 he contributed with 18 catches for 326 yards.  In 2008 he signed and started 9 games with the Chiefs.  His numbers were 17 for 247.  Darling spent all of 2009 on the Chief’s injured reserve list.

4 Mike Furrey – Mike was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Colts in 2000, but was cut at the end of training camp.  He spent 2000-2002 playing in both the XFL and in the arena football league.  In 2003 he was signed by the Rams.  Mike played for the Rams for 3 years on special teams and as a wide receiver.  Starting in 2004 he began playing defense safety.  In 2006 he was picked up by the Lions where he had a career year as a wide receiver.  That year he started in 14 games, caught 98 passes, and had receiving yards of 1,086.  He had another good year with Detroit in 2007, but has done nothing since then (he played for the Browns in 2009).

5 Sean Morey – Morey was drafted by the Patriots in 1999. Outside of his time in NFL Europe, most of Morey’s playing time has been on special teams.

6 Kelley Washington – Washington was drafted by the Bengals in 2003.  He played in Cincinnati for 4 years, but only started in 5 games.  After that, (2007) he signed with the Patriots.  In 2007 he was out of an injury (hamstring) and then 2008 saw him swimming deep in the depth chart.  2009 with the Ravens was actually he best year accumulating 34 catches and 431 yards.

So who do I like?  To be honest with you; Kevin Curtis is the only one who peaks my interest.  I am pretty sure he is going to get picked up and he will probably get some healthy change (money, bling, moo-la).  Statistically, I don’t like Mike Furrey, but the others are just too hard to tell.  Morey is really a utility player not a pure receiver.  As far as Clowney, Darling, and Washington… all of them seem to have potential, but have not been serious contributors to date.  They might be worth signing, but it’s really about meeting and knowing them personally.  Nothing statistically makes them stand out.
